Cloud Engineering Learning Path

Master cloud computing from fundamentals to architecture. This path sequences CloudCaptain's cloud guides into one route: ~8–12 weeks at 5–7 hours/week takes you from zero to associate-certification ready.

By the end you'll be able to: design a multi-tier architecture on a major cloud, explain the trade-offs between providers, secure and cost-optimize a deployment, and walk into an associate-level cert exam or cloud interview with confidence.

Stage 1: Cloud Fundamentals (1–2 weeks)

Start with the provider-neutral concepts every cloud role assumes:

  1. Cloud Computing Fundamentals — service models (IaaS/PaaS/SaaS), deployment models, shared responsibility
  2. Cloud Architecture — regions, availability zones, edge locations, designing for failure
  3. Cloud Migration — the 6 Rs, how real organizations move to the cloud

Stage 2: Pick Your Cloud (3–4 weeks)

Go deep on one provider first — breadth comes later:

Checkpoint: work through your provider's cheat sheet (AWS · Azure · GCP) and make sure every command/service rings a bell.

Stage 3: Core Services Mastery (2–3 weeks)

Whatever provider you chose, be able to design with these five pillars:

  • Compute — VMs, containers, serverless (and when to use each)
  • Storage — object vs block vs file; lifecycle policies
  • Networking — VPCs, subnets, load balancers, CDN, DNS
  • Databases — relational, NoSQL, caching layers
  • Identity — IAM, RBAC, least privilege

Stage 4: Advanced Architecture (2–3 weeks)

  • Multi-Cloud strategy — when it's worth it, when it isn't
  • Cloud Security — defense in depth, encryption, compliance
  • FinOps — cost visibility, optimization, the FinOps framework
  • Disaster recovery, high availability, and Well-Architected reviews
  • Infrastructure as Code with Terraform — the multi-cloud IaC standard

    • Associate: AWS Solutions Architect Associate / AZ-104 / Associate Cloud Engineer
    • Professional: AWS SA Professional / AZ-305 / Professional Cloud Architect
  2. Interview — drill the question sets: AWS · Azure · GCP · Cloud Security · Multi-Cloud · FinOps
  3. Level up — pair this path with the DevOps path or explore the Cloud Architect career path.
